Southland Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
7. Ty Gordon
A greater shooter throughout his career, Gordon is a 6’1 combo guard who got his college start at Northwest Mississippi Community College. After two seasons there, he’d spend a year at Troy with decent production before transferring again. Gordon arrived at Nicholls State in 2020 during the pandemic and would become an impactful backcourt piece for the Colonels for his last two seasons of eligibility.
During that first year with the Colonels, he averaged 14.6 points and 3.7 assists a game and helped lead the program to a regular season title in the Southland. His final year of college ball was certainly his best, averaging more than 20 points a game and delivering a second straight regular season title. Though Nicholls State fell short and settled for the NIT, Gordon was playing his best ball at the right time, scoring at least 30 points in three of the Colonel’s final four regular season games.
Earning First Team All-Southland honors for both years with the Colonels, Gordon was named Southland Newcomer of the Year in 2021 and Player of the Year in 2022, putting an exclamation point on the tail end of his career. Not only was he the league’s top scorer, but he was the most efficient 3-point shooter and finished 15th in the nation in 3-pointers made. What Gordon did in those seasons was special for the Colonels, winning a ton of games with his play.
