Southland Basketball: Ranking of 25 best players from last decade (2013-23)
By Joey Loose
20. Colton Weisbrod
While certainly not the first time it’s happened in this overall series, Weisbrod is another rare example of a player who played for multiple programs in the same league. A 6’5 forward from Nederland, Texas, he spent a single season in the Southland at New Orleans before ending his career with two years at Lamar. In between, he starred at LSC Port Arthur, though we’re not exactly focusing on his junior college accolades today.
During that freshman year at New Orleans, he averaged 7.0 points per game in a mediocre season for the Privateers. It was his time at Lamar that got him mentioned today, beginning in 2016. A full-time starter in the frontcourt, he averaged right around 15 points and 8.1 rebounds per game in both of his upperclassman seasons with the Cardinals. Lamar would finish with decent records and 5th place finishes in league play in both years, while Weisbrod would put up 38 points in a notable game against Central Arkansas.
Those two final years with the Cardinals earned him First Team All-Southland honors, emerging as one of the leading scorers and rebounders in the Southland. He’d have decent production on offense and would help Lamar with quite the turnaround, as the program had won just 7 games the season before his arrival. Weisbrod certainly wasn’t notable with New Orleans but he found his path to notoriety elsewhere in this league.
