SEC Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 1 John Calipari, Kentucky Wildcats
John Calipari has had a grip on college basketball since his coaching career began and Kentucky looks to get back on track because of him next season. Calipari has been coaching since the 80s and has had head coaching jobs at UMASS, New jersey Nets, Memphis, and Kentucky.
Calipari had most of his success at Memphis and Kentucky where he went to 5 elite eights, 2 sweet sixteens, 2 final fours, 1 national championship appearance and a national championship win. Calipari by far has the most impressive resume in the entirety of SEC and may even have the most impressive resume in the NCAA, only rivaling maybe Rick Pitino.
Calipari however, has not had the same type of success in the past 3 seasons. In the past 3 seasons Kentucky has had a 9-16 season and got knocked out in the first weekend of the tournament in the past 2 years. The most heartbreaking being in 2022 where they lost to a 15 seed.
It is just too much to drop him based of the last 3 years when the rest of his career has been nearly flawless. Even if he is a much better recruiter than a x’s and o’s coach. Calipari looks to turn it around this year with his number 1 overall ranked recruiting class, but if he can’t turn it around this coming season he may be dropping on this list.
