SEC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2023-24 season
10. Vanderbilt Commodores
Last season: 22-15, 11-7 in the SEC
The Vanderbilt Commodores are seemingly finding their stride under head coach Jerry Stackhouse as he enters his fifth season on the sidelines. Stackhouse took home SEC Coach of the Year after finishing in a tie for fourth place with Missouri, Tennessee and Auburn in the standings in 2022-23. Vanderbilt really showed their growth this past season following an embarrassing loss to the Crimson Tide, 101-44 back on Jan. 31.
After that loss, the Commodores won eight of their last nine games to close out the conference schedule. They should compete once again in the conference rankings as they kick things off at No. 10 in the preseason conference power rankings.
The Commodores return five players from last year’s rotation and add Evan Taylor (Lehigh), Ven-Allen Lubin (Notre Dame) and Tasos Kamateros (South Dakota) out of the transfer portal. Tyrin Lawrence and Ezra Manjon have proven to be a formidable backcourt duo that returns looking to make more noise with some new additions on the perimeter. With a nice mix of old and new, look for them to climb up the radar under Coach Stackhouse once again.
If they can find a place in the rotation for Lubin to grow in the frontcourt and Kamateros can show he can compete on the high-major stage, this team has the potential to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2017.
