Forward – Scott May (1972-1976)

May was a three-sport athlete in High School who chose to come play for Coach Knight in his first season. May came to Bloomington after a decorated high school career but was ruled academically ineligible his freshman year before playing his sophomore year and dominating from the jump. If Cheaney is considered the best player to ever play for Coach Knight, then May is likely the second best to ever play for coach Knight.

As mentioned May came into Bloomington and dominated from the start of his career he never averaged less than 11 points per game and his senior year the forward averaged 24 points per game with 8 rebounds per game. His senior season was the 1975-1976 season which any college basketball fan knows was the undefeated Indiana team who many consider the greatest College Basketball team of all time. May was the best player on that team and his play was a huge reason that the Hoosiers ended the year undefeated and National Champions. May can say he was the star on the last team to end the season with zero losses in NCAA history. There has not been another undefeated team since then.

The senior season for May saw him take home 7 different Player of the Year awards. He was named the National Player of the Year and won the Naismith trophy as well as the Adolph Rupp award and numerous other player of the year awards from other publications. The forward also was a first team All-American in 1975-1976. He was able to take that and turn it into the number six overall pick in the NBA draft. May had a nice career in the NBA over 7 years. Any old Hoosier’s fan will tell you a ton of stories about May and his ability. He was the star on the best team ever. He deserves a chance to start on the all time starting five.
