NCAA Basketball: Top 10 teams Bob Knight has ever coached
By Joey Loose
7. 1993 Indiana (31-4)
Two years later, Cheaney and Graham were now seniors and unquestioned leaders of these Hoosiers. Cheaney was named AP Player of the Year, averaged 22.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, and won many of the other major player awards. Graham was good for 16.5 points per game and wasn’t the only other threat. The entire starting five averaged double figures for a team that led the nation in field goal percentage and shot lights out from outside the arc.
During nonconference play, the Hoosiers’ only losses came in neutral-site games to Kansas and Kentucky, who were both ranked #3 in the nation at the time. They took care of business all season long, with impressive performances up and down the schedule. Indiana won ten games against ranked opponents, including three of their first four games of the season and a sweep against a Michigan squad ranked Top 4 both times. Their only conference loss came at Ohio State, giving them a 17-1 mark and another regular season championship.
Now earning a 1-seed after back-to-back seasons at a 2-seed, the Hoosiers felt destined for big things. They blew out 16-seed Wright State and survived a close call against 8-seed Xavier. Cheaney had 32 points in their Sweet Sixteen win over 4-seed Louisville, but the ride would end in the Elite Eight. The Hoosiers fell to Kansas for a second time that season, losing 83-77 and seeing their efforts for a repeat trip to the Final Four fall just short.
