MoMo Jones Cleared to Play for Iona

The mid-major conferences in college basketball this season should be a lot of fun to watch, as there are several teams that could certainly play a VCU-like role in the NCAA Tournament come March.

You might want to put the Iona Gaels into the category now.

Why? Because Arizona transfer MoMo Jones has officially been cleared by the NCAA, and will be allowed to suit up for the Gaels this year.

This was already a team that was going to compete for a MAAC title without him, but now that he will be added to the mix, I would have to rank them above Fairfield for that top spot. While chemistry be a little bit of a concern, Jones is simply too good for that to much of an issue.

And we can’t forget about the group that Jones will be joining.

Mike Glover is a big-time player down low, who is a scoring and rebounding machine. Throw in two other returning starters in Kyle Smyth and Scott Machado, and you’ve got one very dangerous lineup.

Seriously, if we’re talking about a team that could play a spoiler role in the Big Dance, Iona has the pieces in place to do just that. A stud point guard, a stud big man, and players who will be able to score when opposing teams key in on those two players.

I love the way Sydney Johnson coaches and think that he’s gonna make a big impact on this Fairfield team this year.

But with the addition of Jones in the mix at Iona, a conference title just got a whole lot tougher.
