Providence PG Vincent Council Breaks Big East Assists Record

While Syracuse was breaking Providence’s collective psyche, Friars point guard Vincent Council quietly broke one of SU’s own cherished records.

Council eclipsed the all-time Big East assists record (426) previously set  by Sherman Douglas, notching his 427th career assist in the first half of Wednesday’s blowout loss against the Orange at the Carrier Dome. Douglas had held the record — which only accounts for assists compiled in big East play — for 24 years.

A four-year starter whose senior season has been beset by injury and shooting struggles, Council is averaging his lowest scoring output (9.5 points per game) in his Friars career. He ranks second in the Big East in assists per game (7.3), behind only SU’s Michael Carter-Williams.

Council became Providence’s all-time assists leader last Saturday, passing Ernie DiGregorio, whose record (662 assists) remained unsurpassed for 40 years.
