While the Final Four has yet to tip off, the transfer portal window is in full swing. Contrary to last season, the portal has moved faster than ever because the window for players to transfer has shrunk from 45 days to just 30 this offseason. The portal will close April 22.
While there are plenty of big-time names in the portal (and more to come), take a look at 10 under-the-radar players who will be sure to make an impact at their next stop.
Tyeree Bryan, Santa Clara Broncos
Tyeree Bryan is the definition of consistency, shooting 45% from the field in three seasons at Charleston Southern and Santa Clara. The 6-foot-6 combo guard brings a unique blend of efficiency and rebounding prowess -- a perfect prototype to make an impact at the P5 level. He averaged 4.4 RPG last season. Santa Clara was 6-1 when Bryan corralled more than seven boards in a game.
Vasean Allette, TCU Horned Frogs
Only a junior next season, Vasean Allette had a strong sophomore campaign in Fort Worth, averaging a well-rounded 11.4 PPG, 4.1 RPG and 3.5 APG. While Allette (like the rest of the 2024-25 TCU Horned Frogs) struggled to connect from deep on a consistent clip, Allette finds ways to create opportunities for others and is a tenacious on-ball defender. Don’toverlook his shooting percentages -- Allette has the intangibles to continue to make an impact at the P5 level.
Adam Nije Jr., Iona Gaels
Adam Nije Jr. was among the top freshmen in the MAAC last season, averaging 12.4 PPG, 2.8 RPG and 4.2 APG 41.3% shooting from the field. While Nije shot under 30% from three, expect that number to vastly increase as he transitions into his sophomore year this offseason. Nije averaged 29.3 MPG and is just breaking the surface with talent. This is a big-time transfer portal name to watch.
Jahnathan Lamothe, North Carolina A&T Aggies
Jahnathan Lamothe is among the more underappreciated blends of a guard/wing in this year’s transfer portal. The former top-100 recruit spent one season at Maryland before breaking out at North Carolina A&T, averaging 13.8 PPG, 7.3 RPG and 2.6 for the Aggies this season. Lamothe took part in a high-volume role offensively, averaging over 12 FGA per game. While it's unlikely that Lamothe will get that level of volume at his next stop, the raw talent is ever-so-evident on a guard/wing who’s 6-foot-4 but was a demanding presence on the boards and from the field.
Tariq Francis, NJIT Highlanders
Among the more prolific, polarizing and pure scorers in the America East, Tariq Francis enters the transfer portal with two more years of eligibility remaining. This season, Francis averaged 19.2 PPG, 4.3 RPG and 3.6 APG and had no shortage of confidence offensively. Francis, the reigning 2023-24 America East RO, is a Pittsburgh, PA native and expects to get plenty of high-major interest in the year’s transfer portal cycle.
Milos Ilic, Loyola (MD) Greyhounds
Experience and improvement. Those two words best describe Loyola (MD) transfer Milos Ilic. This season, the six-foot-9 Serbian forward averaged 14.4 PPG, 7.5 RPG and 3.0 APG on 52.4% shooting from the field. According to BartTorvik, llic’s PRPG! (2.5) was by far the highest rating on the team. Throughout his three years, Ilic improved his FG% from 40.1% to 48.1% to 52.4% while molding into a true stretch-forward that can -- and will -- make an impact at the P5 level.
Chauncey Wiggins, Clemson Tigers
At 6-foot-10, it's rare to find a forward with as talented of floor-stretching abilities as Chauncey Wiggins. Brad Brownell has implemented a development factory at Clemson and Wiggins’ development offensively played an instrumental role in Clemson’s success over the past two seasons. This season, Wiggins averaged 8.3 PPG and nearly three boards per game while shooting 36.5% from three. While Wiggins may not have improved defensively as many anticipated this season, the upside is evident. He just needs to find the right system.
Kanye Clary, Mississippi State Bulldogs
It seems like forever ago that Kanye Clary ravaged through the Big Ten. The five-foot-11 guard averaged 16.7 PPG at Penn State in 2023-24 before being dismissed from the team. He transferred to Mississippi State this season but only appeared in seven games due to injury. The crafty scorer has fallen under the radar but has shown he can contribute at a high level. With a (presumed) clean slate of health and a new change of scenery, Clary will be a consistent headache for opposing guards next season.
Will Johnston, Loyola Marymount Lions
Will Johnston's name hasn't been talked about enough. He has been a key contributor everywhere he has been. Expect that to continue at his next stop. Johnston, who started his career at South Georgia Tech, transferred to UTRGV in 2022-23 before heading to Loyola Marymount for the past two seasons. This year, averaged nearly 12 PPG and 3.2 APG, with an eFG% of 51.6. Johnston is a three-point shooter through and through. He shot 7/8 from three in Loyola Marymount’s win over San Diego in the WCC Tournament.
Jayden Reid, South Florida Bulls
Jayden Reid took a big-time step forward in his sophomore season at South Florida, averaging 12.6 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 3.6 APG and nearly two SPG for the Bulls this season. He shot 36% from three. While the five-foot-10 point guard has generated high-major interest in this year’s transfer portal cycle, his name deserves far more recognition than what he is getting. Expect Reid to make an immediate impact as the lead guard in a high-major backcourt.
