Jeff Capel Out at Oklahoma

facebooktwitterreddit

And the hits just keep on coming. We’ve got another firing in the world of college basketball today, and this time around, it’s Jeff Capel at Oklahoma.

From FoxSports.com:

"Just three years after an Elite Eight, Oklahoma has parted ways with Jeff Capel. According to sources, Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione informed Capel of the decision on Monday."

Not exactly surprising here, as after Blake Griffin left a few seasons ago, this team just hasn’t been that good. Capel’s overall record (96-69) with the Sooners will be deceiving to those who haven’t followed them recently since 30 of those 96 wins came in the ’08-’09 Elite Eight season with Griffin.

But still, I do think Capel is a good coach. He proved that at VCU. And he’ll get another opportunity, likely at a mid-major school.

It’ll be interesting to see who Oklahoma goes after now. They will probably go after the hot mid-major coach who leads his team to a nice run in this year’s NCAA Tournament, as we see that happen a lot with these power conference teams.

Oklahoma is not a bad job, but it is hard to recruit against teams like Kansas and Texas. It’s not like they can’t be successful though. Yes, they got a once in….well, a lot of years player in Griffin, but you can still win there.

We’ll see what names get thrown out there and who eventually accepts the challenge.
