College Hoops Attendance Increases In 2010-2011 Season

It’s always intriguing to look at the numbers when it comes to college basketball.

Whether it’s looking at team statistics, player statistics, or anything else number-wise. I love the statistical part of the game. And this is coming from someone who absolutely hates math.

So it was cool to see the NCAA release the attendance numbers from this past season today, which included some interesting notes in terms of overall attendance and specific team attendance.

Overall attendance for Division I college basketball is from a year ago (an increase of 86,000) which is obviously good news of you’re a lover of the college game. There’s no scientific reasoning as to why these numbers increased or anything like that, and it’s not exactly an amount that makes or breaks the game, but it’s still interesting nonetheless.

Tracking individual school attendance would probably be a more exciting task, as you could draw some conclusions one way or the other on a particular program by looking at the success that they had.

Of course, it should come as no surprise that Kentucky once again was the leader in team attendance. And as you can say in the press release, that’s 15 of the last 16 seasons that they’ve led the country. You may not particularly root for John Calipari or the Wildcats, but you can’t say that they aren’t passionate.

And then there’s the nugget in there about the Big Ten once again leading in conference home attendance…..for the 35th year in a row. That may surprise some people, as I honestly didn’t know they had been the leaders for that long.

But attendance increases overall are good to see, and hopefully that trend continues next season.
