MoMo Jones to St. John’s Probably Won’t Happen Now
By Blake Lovell
Fans of St. John’s got some news that they thought could change their 2011-2012 season several days ago, as it was reported that former Arizona point guard MoMo Jones would be joining the Red Storm.
However, not it looks like that’s not gonna happen. At least not this season, anyways.
It turns out that the transfer of Jones to St. John’s this season would not be allowed due to the fact that his former high school coach, Moe Hicks, is now on Steve Lavin‘s staff. Yep, there’s an NCAA bylaw for something like that too.
This is unfortunate for Lavin and company, as they really could have used his services after losing a lot of seniors from the breakout team they had this past season.
But, they do have a very good recruiting class coming in, so it’s not like they’ll go winless or anything now that Jones won’t be running the show. Obviously he would have helped out tremendously in terms of helping the new guys find a flow offensively, but now they’ll have to seek out other options.
He was a key piece of the puzzle for Arizona and was a nice facilitator for Derrick Williams. They were both huge in the Wildcats’ run to the Elite Eight in this year’s NCAA Tournament. And well, that’s two pretty big losses for Sean Miller‘s squad.
We’ll have to wait and see where Jones decides to transfer now. Of course, he could still decide to go to St. John’s. It’s just that he’d have to go to junior college for a season first though.
For a player with his kind of skill, I doubt that is the route that he takes. I’m sure there are a few power conference schools that would love to have him.
