Conference Expansion: West Virginia Expected to Join the Big 12

facebooktwitterreddit

The whirlwind known as conference expansion has once again been brought to the forefront, with the Big 12 being the conference receiving all of the focus this time around.

ESPN’s Joe Schad is reporting that the Big 12 is set to add West Virginia to the conference, and that the official word could come down pretty much any time now.

When all of these rumors got started, it seemed like this move would only happen if/when Missouri became an official member of the SEC. Now, according to a source of Schad’s, this move will still go down regardless of what happens with Missouri.

But I think we all know by now that the Tigers are going to the SEC. It’s just a matter of when it happens.

And in the grand scheme of things, this should surprise no one. West Virginia was the school that we thought might be joining the SEC a while back, but when that didn’t pan it, you know that the SEC would look elsewhere.

So when the SEC seemingly became interested in Missouri, West Virginia was the perfect fit to replace them in the Big 12.

Obviously, the reason behind adding the Mountaineers was mainly a football decision. But with Bob Huggins at the helm, the Big 12 is gonna be adding a pretty strong basketball school as well.

With all of this about to fall into place, and soon it seems, we have to turn our attention back to the Big East.

What do they do now?

Unfortunately, that’s become a common question in the conference expansion race. And it’s a question that’s kind of hard to answer at this point.
