Recruiting News: N.C. State Adds T.J. Warren to 2012 Class
By Blake Lovell
Even though N.C. State has yet to play a game under Mark Gottfried, they already look like they made a great hire when they scooped him up back in April.
The reasoning for that is his fantastic recruiting, and yesterday, Gottfried struck once again.
T.J. Warren, an ESPN Top 25 recruit, made the announcement yesterday that he would be playing for the Wolfpack next season. He’s a 6’7″ forward that was also considering Georgetown, but decided to join the excellent class that N.C. State will be bringing in a year from now.
While Gottfried had teams that underachieved when he was at Alabama, the problem was never recruiting. He brought in great players there, and was a key recruiter for that 1995 UCLA team that won a national title.
It’s all about getting the group to gel though, and that’s where some of his Crimson Tide teams failed.
He’s certainly giving himself an opportunity to succeed in Raleigh, considering that he’s added Warren, a guard who can do it all in Rodney Purvis, and a true point guard in Tyler Lewis. That’s a trio you can win with.
Expectations will be high for this program in a year or two given the talent that is going to be coming in there. He’s still going to have to battle the powers like North Carolina and Duke to make this a team that can win an ACC crown, but grabbing high quality talent is the first step.
N.C. State fans probably aren’t clamoring for a national title anytime soon. But they do want to be relevant in the college basketball scene once again.
And Gottfried is taking big steps towards making that a reality.
