Conference Expansion: Missouri to the SEC is Now Official

facebooktwitterreddit

If there’s one thing that has become a common occurrence in conference expansion, it’s that any move that could take place must be rumored for a few weeks or months before it actually goes down.

The same goes for the Missouri to the SEC aspect of conference expansion, which has been officially been made…..official.

The Tigers will be a member of the SEC next season, or at least, that’s the plan right now in terms of when the move will actually take place.

But at least now we do know that Missouri will be joining the conference at some point.

And with that, the SEC adds the 14th member that we all knew they would add sooner rather than later. From a scheduling standpoint, 13 was going to be tough. And the only two schools who have been heavily rumored to make the move to the SEC were Missouri and West Virginia.

When the Mountaineers decided to make the jump from the Big East to the Big 12, it only made sense that Missouri would then take center stage in terms of who the SEC would add next.

Again, the golden rule of conference expansion is that it’s all about football. From a basketball standpoint though, this is a very good move for the SEC.

If you put Missouri in the conference this season, they would arguably be the fifth best team in the league.

It’ll be interesting to see how new head coach Frank Haith leads the program into this transition, especially now that he’ll be recruiting against the likes of John Calipari, Billy Donovan, and Kevin Stallings.

Oh, and don’t forget about someone that Tiger fans should be quite familiar with: Mike Anderson.

And as is always the case in conference expansion, it’ll be even more intriguing to see what the next move is. Big 12, you’re up…..again.
