Recruiting News: Alex Poythress Will Play For Kentucky
By Blake Lovell
With the rumor mill stirring the past few days as to who would land Alex Poythress, the official word just came down from the highly-touted recruit himself.
John Calipari did it again.
Poythress signed his letter of intent and will be heading to Lexington to join the Kentucky Wildcats next season, as he chose the Wildcats over Vanderbilt, Memphis, and Florida.
The whirlwind surrounding this announcement has been crazy over the past few days.
At one point, there was the belief that it was down to Kentucky and Vandy. At another point, it was believed that Josh Pastner and Memphis had swooped in and took the lead. And earlier today, there was speculation that Florida was making a strong push.
It goes to show you that when it comes to a big recruit like Poythress, rumors will spread like a wildfire. And they most certainly did.
But the constant belief throughout this entire thing was that Calipari and Kentucky seemed to have the edge.
It’s pretty easy to understand why. There are very few schools in the NCAA that have the appeal that Kentucky does. With a masterful recruiter like Calipari, and a program that continuously sends players to the NBA, it’s hard for a high school kid to pass up that kind of opportunity.
He would have had a chance to play in the league had he chosen the other three schools, but as we all know, there’s just something about Kentucky. They’re a different animal.
Poythress definitely has the talent to play at the next level and this is simply a huge get for Calipari and his staff. One more huge get, since Kentucky’s 2012 class was already good with Archie Goodwin and Willie Cauley.
But make no mistake about it. It just got a whole lot better.
