Coach K Moves One Step Closer to Becoming All-Time Leader in Wins
By Blake Lovell
Duke had quite the game on their hands a night ago, as one of the best mid-major teams in the country, Belmont, took them right to the wire before falling 77-76 at Cameron Indoor.
Today’s game wasn’t even close to that difficult for the Blue Devils, as they knocked off Presbyterian in a 41-point rout.
With that, Mike Krzyzewski now ties Bob Knight at the top of the all-time leader in wins in Division I category, and on Tuesday, he’ll have a chance to sit alone by himself with a win over Michigan State in Madison Square Garden.
Whether you love or hate Duke, the fact remains that Coach K didn’t get to this mark by accident.
Without question, he’s one of the greatest coaches in the history of basketball, and it would be rather fitting if Duke wins on Tuesday and gives him the record in the basketball mecca that is MSG.
But, by no means is it a gimme at this point.
Even though Duke looked great in today’s win, they’ve still got a ways to go before they are a true national title contender. Belmont exposed some weaknesses, and although Michigan State didn’t look fantastic against North Carolina on the aircraft carrier, that’s still a team that could give this Duke team all they can handle.
Needless to say, it should be a pretty awesome atmosphere at the Garden when these two teams take the floor.
And even though Tom Izzo has all the respect in the world for Coach K, you can bet that he’ll be doing everything he can do to deny him of that coveted 903rd win.
