No Criminal Charges Coming From the Xavier/Cincinnati Brawl
By Blake Lovell
Chances are, you’ve heard about this little brouhaha that Xavier and Cincinnati had this past weekend.
It wasn’t a pretty sight, to say the least. Both schools handed down suspensions to players, with Yancy Gates getting the largest suspension at six games.
And given the nature of the incident, there were a lot of questions raised as to whether any criminal charges would be filed in this situation.
It looks like that won’t be the case, as a prosecutor has decided against doing that.
Here’s the details:
"Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said he made the decision following an investigation that included review of films and interviews with the two teams’ coaches and some players and witnesses. He also said that Xavier center Kenny Frease was satisfied with an apology from Bearcat forward Yancy Gates after the two “reached out to each other privately."
As bad as it was, it never seemed like there would be any criminal charges in this whole deal. Both schools acted quickly to hand out punishments…..even if a few of them might have been a little too light given the circumstances.
Of course, even without any criminal charges filed, it’s still a huge black eye for both programs and for college basketball in general.
Let’s hope we don’t see another incident like this one for a very long time.
