Today’s Games To Watch: Bama & Vandy battle for SEC Shotgun Status
By Jamal Murphy
After a jam-packed Wednesday of college basketball, there are just a few games tonight worth keeping a close eye on. Let’s take a quick look:
Vanderbilt (13-4, 3-0) at #24 Alabama (13-4, 2-1) – 7PM ET, ESPN3
Vandy has seemingly gotten their act together after a rough start to the season. The Commodores have won 7 straight, but the only impressive win out of that bunch was at Marquette in late December. Alabama will easily be their toughest test since then. Bama had won 5 straight before their loss at Mississippi State last weekend.
Prediction: Vanderbilt 73, Alabama 71
California (15-4, 5-1) at Washington (11-6, 4-1) – 830PM ET, ROOT
This Pac-12 match-up will be interesting because it features two of the league’s most talented teams. Cal has been the better team, but has been inconsistent. The Huskies probably have the most talent in the league, but that talent has not translated into wins. At home, however, Washington has been a tough out.
Predicition: Washington 76, California 70
#9 North Carolina (15-3, 2-1) at Virginia Tech (11-6, 0-3) – 9PM ET, ESPN3
We just want to see UNC’s response to the 33-point drubbing they took at Florida State last weekend. The Hokies seem headed toward a familiar NCAA Tournament-less March, only without the looks of shock.
Prediction: North Carolina 84, Virginia Tech 69
#19 Illinois (15-3, 4-1) at Penn State (9-10, 1-5) – 9PM ET, ESPN3
Illinois is hot right now, coming off an upset victory over Ohio State and Brandon Paul’s 43-point performance. Penn State seems to relish the “trap game” role and they are capable of beating more talented teams on their home floor, ask Purdue.
Prediction: Illinois 69, Penn State 66
UCLA (9-7, 3-2) at Oregon State (10-7, 1-5) – 1030PM ET
This looks like a tale of two teams moving in different directions. UCLA seems to be inching back towards credibility, while the Beavers are running back towards their customary pretender role.
Prediction: UCLA 72, Oregon State 66
