Daily Poll: Should College Basketball Season Start Later?

facebooktwitterreddit

The basis surrounding today’s poll comes from a column that was written yesterday by Dan Wolken that touches on a radical idea for pushing back the start of the college hoops season.

Before weighing in on the poll, I highly suggest you go read this excellent piece by Mr. Wolken.

Now, after doing so, what do you think? Would it actually be possible to move the start of college basketball back to January? There are a ton of factors that would come into play here, and while at this point is seems unlikely that the NCAA would ever entertain such forward thinking idea, it’s still an intriguing proposal.

There’s a truth that cannot be denied though in terms of the regular season, and this is the most powerful quote in the piece:

"The NCAA Tournament is so big, so popular and so profitable that moving it will, admittedly, never happen. But while college basketball is content to ride its three weeks in the spotlight, its regular season is becoming increasingly easy to ignore."

And that’s where this idea has some traction. There has to be a way to make the regular season more important. A way to give it the spotlight it needs.

It’s never going to win the head-to-head battle with college and pro football in November and December. That we know. Which is why it wouldn’t be all that crazy for the NCAA to entertain a proposal like the one that Wolken suggests in his column.

But I’ll turn it over to you. What do you think? Would you be in favor of moving back the start of college hoops season?
