Kevin Murphy Drops 50 Points For Tennessee Tech

Creighton’s Doug McDermott almost did it a while back when he put up 44, but we had our first 50-point outburst of the Division I last night, as Tennessee Tech’s Kevin Murphy put up a 50 spot on SIU-Edwardsville in a 98-80 victory.

The scoring performance is a school record, and judging by the numbers, it’s clear that Murphy was on top of his game.

He went 16 of 21 from the field. He went 6 of 9 from three point land. And he knocked down 12 of 14 free throws in the process. Not a bad night’s work for the 6’6″ senior guard.

While the 50-point explosion might be a surprise from a numbers standpoint, it’s not a surprise in terms of who it came from.

Murphy was a hot pick in the preseason for OVC Player of the Year and has already built up a 21-point average this season. His previous season high of 34 only came five days ago in a win over Eastern Kentucky, so he’s clearly comfortable with his game right now.

The next three games for the Golden Eagles come against bottom of the pack teams in the OVC, and with the way he’s been playing, he might go for another school record soon.
