College Basketball Recruiting: 2011-2012 Year In Review

The regular season for high school hoops has ended. It’s been another exciting year for the sport. There were some great individual performances headlined by Shabazz Muhammad, Jabari Parker, Nerlens Noel and Julius Randle.

Great teams like Oak Hill Academy and Findlay Prep displayed their dominance through out the year. Let’s recap the season by taking a look at some of the best events of the year.

City of Palms Classic (Fort Myers, FL)

  • Prestonwood Christian (TX) 62, Arlington-Grace Prep (TX) 42

Prestonwood avenges a 79-64 loss to Grace Prep five days before on ESPNU. Prestonwood was ignited by 6-foot-7 freshman Mickey Mitchell who led the way with 19 points on several highlight reel plays. Junior stud Julius Randle was saddled with foul trouble the majority of the game and finished the night with 7 points and 7 rebounds. Kansas recruit Zach Peters chipped in with 19 points. Grace Prep was led by Baylor recruit 7-foot senior Isaiah Austin’s 10 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out with five minutes left. Super sophomore Emmanuel Mudiay finished with 10 points for Grace Prep. Randle was the tournament MVP after averaging 20 points for the tournament. His 31 points in the semi final powered Prestonwood to the finals.

Bass Pro Shops Tournament of Champions (Springfield, MO)

  • Westbury Christian (TX) 69, Lincoln (CA) 61

Westbury was led by Baylor recruit L.J. Rose. Rose scored 14 points and had 9 assist while being named the tournaments MVP. He now follows in the footsteps of previous MVP’s such as Alonzo Mourning, Anthony Peeler and Lamar Odom. Rose finished the three game tournament with totals of 54 points and 30 assist. Westbury was led in scoring by Delvin Dickerson’s 20 points and Devon Turk assisted with 19. Lincoln’s 2013 top 60 player Tyree Robinson was matched up against Rose and finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds. His twin brother Tyree contributed with 16 points and 9 assist. Jeremiah Turner paced Lincoln and led all scorers with 27 points.

Beach Ball Classic (Myrtle Beach, SC)

  • Milton (GA) 70, Lone Peak (UT) 42

Milton first ever trip to the Beach Ball Classic ended in the tournament finals with the championship. Milton reached the finals by upsetting Bishop Gorman and the tournaments most outstanding player Shabazz Muhammad. Muhammad finished the night with 32 points in a losing effort. Milton was led by Virginia recruit Evan Nolte’s 20 points and was named most valuable player. Shaquille Johnson chipped in with 19 points. Milton controlled the game from the start and led most of the way by as much as 28 points. Nick Emery paced Lone Peak with 21 points.

Chick-Fil-A Classic (Columbia, SC)

  • Classic I – Oak Hill Academy (VA) 76, Paul VI (VA) 55

The nations #1 team Oak Hill dominated Paul VI the majority of the game by shooting 58% from the field. Oak Hill was paced by Georgetown recruit D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera’s 17 points and was named tournaments most outstanding player. N.C. State recruit Tyler Lewis set a tournament record with 13 assist. Lewis and UCLA recruit Jordan Adams were named to the all tourney team.

  • Classic II – West Charlotte (NC) 60, Spring Valley (SC) 57

West Charlotte outlasted a tough Spring Valley team in overtime for the win. Mike Brown of West Charlotte led three double digit scorers with 20 points. Spring Valley was paced by Devante Brook’s 17 points and was named to the all tourney team. Brown and Mark Blackmon of West Charlotte were named to the all tourney team.

Les Schwab Invitational (Hillsboro, OR)

  • Oak Hill Academy (VA) 57, Jesuit (OR) 50

Oak Hill Academy continued their national tour by finishing off a gritty Jesuit team that has won three state titles. Oak Hill with six players signed to division 1 schools tore through the first 3 games of the tourney by margins of 40, 28, and 37 point wins. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera led all scorers with 23 points and Tyler Lewis was named most valuable player finishing the game with 10 points. Jesuit was led by Rick Maddock’s 14 points. Khyan Rayner and Xavier Coleman chipped in with 11 points each.

Spalding Hoop Hall Classic (Springfield, MA)

  • Findlay Prep (NV) 75, Simeon (IL) 50

Findlay Prep proved to strong for 2013 #1 player Jabari Parker and Simeon. Findlay Prep’s roster is loaded with several division 1 players with seven players standing 6-foot-7 or taller. Findlay was led by Oregon recruit 5-foot-11 guard Dominic Artis 21 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assist and 4 blocks. Arizona recruit Brandon Ashley assisted with 13 points and 8 rebounds while Nigel Williams-Goss poured in 18 points. Jabari Parker didn’t back down with 24 points and 12 rebounds but didn’t get much help from top 50 senior Kendrick Nunn and Steven Taylor.

  • Bishop Gorman (NV) 73, Dematha (MD) 65

Shabazz Muhammad showed why many consider him the best high school player in the country. Shabazz displayed an array of moves around the basket to score 37 points and grab 6 rebounds. Whether it was finishing on the break or shooting fade away jumpers from the block, Shabazz was unstoppable. He was named most outstanding player of the classic. Teammate and Stanford recruit Roscoe Allen finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Dematha was guided by Syracuse recruit Jerami Grant’s 12 points. Teammates Jairus Lyles scored 17 points and Pittsburgh recruit James Robinson chipped in with 13 points.

  • St. Anthony (NJ) 68, Miller Grove (GA) 48

Miller Grove proved to be no match for St. Anthony in this contest. The versatility of St. Anthony’s Kyle Anderson was on full display. The UCLA recruit dazzled the audience to the tune of 18 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assist and 5 steals. Temple recruit Josh Brown assisted Kyle with 10 points. St Anthony’s defense stifled Miller Grove’s big man Tony Parker by limiting his touches in the paint. Parker finished with a paltry 6 points, far below his season average. Teammate and Georgia recruit Brandon Morris was a non factor due to foul trouble.

  • Brewster Academy (NH) 57 The Tilton School (NH) 53

This was widely the most anticipated match up of the classic. The clash between Mitch McGary and Nerlens Noel regarded as two of the best big men in the country in their respective classes. Tilton’s Noel dominated the paint despite the loss. Noel finished with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 7 blocks. Brewster’s big man and Michigan recruit McGary finished with 3 points against Nerlens. Brewster’s loaded roster of division 1 talent was too much for Tilton to overcome. Brewster was led by Florida State recruit Aaron Thomas who scored 23 points and N.C. State recruit T.J. Warren assisted with 13 points. Super sophomore Wayne Selden scored 16 points for Tilton.

  • Mater Dei (CA) 88, Christ the King (NY) 50

Traditional power Mater Dei flexed another muscle in dismantling Christ the King. Katin Reinhardt of Mater Dei scorched the nets with a barrage of three point shots. The UNLV recruit finished the game with the second highest scoring output of the tourney with 35 points. Colorado recruit Xavier Johnson helped pace Mater Dei with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The lone bright spot for Christ the King was Connecticut recruit Omar Calhoun who finished with 18 points and 6 rebounds.

  • Oak Hill Academy (VA) 88 Prestonwood Christian (TX) 55

Once again the #1 team in the country Oak Hill steam rolled to another victory. Oak Hill was led by their trio of perimeter players. Jordan Adams scored a team high of 23 points. Tyler Lewis dominated with 15 points, 9 assist, 3 steals and 3 rebounds. D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera assisted with 16 points. Prestonwood was playing from behind all game and didn’t have enough manpower to compete with Oak Hill. Prestonwood was led by junior stud Julius Randle with 23 points and 9 rebounds.

  • St. Marks (MA) 67, Friends Central (PA) 57

St. Marks outlasted Friends Central with their big man Kaleb Tarczewski leading the way. Tarczewski will join the #1 recruiting class in the nation at Arizona next year. Tarczewski dominated the paint to finish with 22 points. Michigan recruit Nik Stauskas scored 16 points and Jamie Spears contributed 15 points. Top 50 senior Amile Jefferson of Friends Central was held to 14 points and Conrad Chambers scored 19 points.
