In a pompous return to the NCAA Tournament, Rick Majerus made sure his Saint Louis Billikens got the victory, as the 9th seed in West Regional ended the season of Conference USA Champion Memphis, 61-54.
It was the first tournament win since 2003 for Majerus, in the first tournament game for Saint Louis since he took over as head coach back in 2007. The Billikens closed strong, outscoring the Memphis Tigers 38-31 in the second half, and doing it with sound fundamental play. Saint Louis shot just under 44% from the floor and out rebounded the Tigers, while junior guard Kwamain Mitchell led the way in the scoring department with 22.
Memphis struggled hitting their shots, as the Tigers were just 2-for-15 from behind the arc. Will Barton led Memphis in scoring with 16, but not a single player had more than six boards.
Up next for the Saint Louis Billikens is an impending matchup with the No. 1 seed Michigan State Spartans, who are about to face No. 16 seed LIU Brooklyn.
