FIBA U18 Championship 6/17/12: Team USA Thumps Mexico
The USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team cruised to its second blowout win in as many days on Sunday, drubbing Mexico, 110-59, on day two of the FIBA Americas Championship.
Maryland-bound forward Jake Layman led the way by scoring a team-high 18 points and knocking down all four of Team USA’s three-pointers. The U.S. shot just 4-of-23 from behind the arc on the afternoon.
In total, five Americans including Layman finished in double figures.
Rodney Purvis (N.C. State) and Shaq Goodwin (Memphis) each chipped in 13 points, while Montrezl Harrell (Louisville) and Julius Randle (uncommitted) added 11 apiece.
Team USA took a 58-26 advantage into intermission, leading by as much as 33 points in the second quarter. The U.S. counteracted its poor perimeter shooting by dominating Mexico inside. The Americans outscored the Mexicans 70-34 in the paint.
Next up for Team USA is a Monday night tilt against tournament-host Brazil to round out Group A play. The U.S. has already clinched a berth in Tuesday’s semifinals.
