2013 Shooting Guard Kameron Williams Chooses Ohio State
Thad Matta and Ohio State have had an awfully quiet time on the recruiting trail this year. Having spent the last 13 months chasing another recruit to pair with 2013 pledge Marc Loving, who committed to the Buckeyes last August, Matta and his staff finally got one this week.
High-scoring Baltimore guard Kameron Williams committed to Matta and Ohio State on Tuesday, shortly following a visit to the Columbus campus over the weekend. Williams, a borderline Top 100 recruit in the 2013 class, held notable offers from Marquette, Miami (FL), Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Syracuse. The Big Ten, however, ultimately won him over.
Ohio State ramped up the pressure on Williams after striking out on former target Allerik Freeman, who earlier this month committed to UCLA. With much effort and persistence, Matta was able to pry Williams, a Miami lean for most of the summer, away from the ACC.
A 6-foot-2 combo guard who will play the 2 in college, Williams is an aggressive scorer with a gunner’s mentality. He led the EYBL in scoring this summer, averaging more than 22 points per game for the Baltimore Elite. Williams shot 53-percent from the floor and 48 percent from downtown during the summer season. Though his go-to move is the pull-up and pop, the Mount Saint Joseph (HS) star is capable of putting the ball on the floor and getting to the rim.
Williams figures to join a crowded backcourt by the time he arrives on campus in the fall of 2013. Aaron Craft, Lenzelle Smith, Shannon Scott and freshman Amedeo Della Valle are all projected roster placeholders for the 2013-14 season. The undersized Williams would be the first pure scorer of the lot and a much needed offensive boost for a Buckeye backcourt in search of more playmakers on the wing.
