Prized Forward Kyle Washington Headed to NC State

Mark Gottfried’s sudden revival in Raleigh is showing no signs of slowing down.

Gottfried notched NC State’s second noteworthy recruit in as many weeks on Sunday, earning a commitment from Brewster Academy (N.H.) power forward Kyle Washington. Washington, one of the 20 best power forwards in the class of 2013, gave the Wolfpack coaching staff a solid verbal during an official visit at the school over the weekend.

He chose NC State over Washington, Baylor, Ohio State and Iowa State.

The Minnesota native sensed an opportunity to play in the nation’s top emerging basketball league while suiting up for a school that not only offers a chance to compete for a championship, but also offers playing time available for the taking. NC State loses senior forwards Scott Wood and Richard Howell at the end of next season, and preseason ACC player of the year C.J. Leslie will likely declare for the NBA draft after this, his junior year. That leaves ample opportunity for Washington to contribute as a freshman immediately during the 2013-14 campaign.

A face-up 4 with the ability to man the 5 in a pinch, Washington is a gangly, super-long and athletic player oozing with upside. He is a lefty shooter who runs the floor effortlessly, with a game reminiscent of former ACC standout Chris Bosh. Washington is a finesse player who finishes inside thanks to his length, not strength. He showed the ability over the summer to put the ball on the deck and attack the rim or spot up from 18-feet and knock down a set outside jumper.

Washington is the second high-profile 2013 recruit to pledge to NC State in the last two weeks. Anthony “Cat” Barber, a 5-star point guard from Hampton (VA), committed to the Wolfpack earlier this month.
