College Basketball: Few Changes in Latest Coaches’ Poll
Only minor tweaks and shuffling in the rankings highlighted the newest coaches’ poll, which consists of the same 25 teams this week as it did last.
Illinois (No. 10) and Gonzaga (No. 14) mark the only changes in the Top 15. The two schools switched places after the Illini upset the Bulldogs in Spokane over the weekend.
Minnesota made the biggest climb, vaulting from No. 21 to No. 16 after handling South Dakota State and USC last week. North Carolina dipped from No. 16 to No. 18 despite winning its only game of the week (vs. East Tennessee State). Kentucky, meanwhile, suffered a delayed plung after inexplicably checking in at No. 19 in last week’s rankings. The Wildcats fell three spots (No. 19 to No. 22) in a week that included a pair of blowout wins over Samford and Portland.
N.C. State (No. 24) and Notre Dame (No. 25) swap spots at the bottom of the poll. Georgetown moved up two spots from No. 23 to No. 21 despite another anemic offensive performance, this time against Towson. Michigan State also climbed two spots from No. 19 to No. 17.
Don’t try to make much sense of this week’s coaches’ poll, which consists of more untimely cosmetic changes than you’ll see in a year in the AP poll. Take it for what it’s worth and enjoy the unintended humor it offers.
