Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports
The Oregon Ducks felt disrespected after receiving a 12-seed in the NCAA Tournament from the selection committee. The PAC-12 Tournament Champions proved that they were under seeded and under appreciated as they pulled off the 12/5 upset over the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Really, for most of the forty-minutes of play, it looked like the seeds should have been flipped.
Johnathan Loyd made a jumper with 13:05 left in the first half to give Oregon a 13-12 lead, and they didn’t look back from there as they led for the remainder of the evening to earn a 68-55 win to move on to the Round of 32 on Saturday.
The Ducks were able to pull the upset over Oklahoma State despite an off shooting night from their leading scorer E.J. Singler. Singler scored just 8 points on 3-of-12 shooting from the field. With Singler struggling, the Ducks supporting cast stepped up to move them into the next round. Four Oregon players finished in double figures led by Damyean Dotson’s 17 points.
A big difference in the game was Oregon’s dominance on the glass where they held a 45-29 advantage over the Cowboys led by Arsalan Kazemi’s 17 boards to go along with his 11 points.
In what was likely his last college game, Big 12 player of the year Marcus Smart couldn’t find his rhythm as he made only 5 of his 13 shots from the floor for 14 points. He did contribute in other facets with 8 boards, 4 assists and 5 steals. Markel Brown was the leading scorer for Oklahoma State with 16 points.
The Ducks move on to play Saint Louis in the Round of 32 on Saturday.
