Yesterday we reported that Kansas’ coach Bill Self was getting fined and reprimanded for his actions during the NCAA tournament, which was a little surprising considering the coach’s reputation. This new report, from the NCAA, of someone being reprimanded is less than surprising. Ole Miss’ Marshall Henderson received a public reprimand for his behavior after a 3rd round loss to LaSalle in the NCAA tournament. The behavior in question is highlighted in the video below.
“A point of emphasis with the committee over the last several years continues to be ensuring that championship participants act in a manner that represents the highest standards of sportsmanship,” said Ron Wellman, chair of the Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. “Mr. Henderson’s actions failed in this regard.”
Henderson has long been described as a fiery player both on and off the court. He is a high volume scorer who takes a lot of his team’s shots and makes no apologies for it. Some people have shown him a lot of love and adoration for it and many more have begun to detest him for the same reasons.
When Henderson decided to return for his senior season, he admitted openly that he needed to show a change in attitude if he wanted to get a legitimate look at the NBA because no NBA team is going to stick its neck out for a highly emotional player that does not put up impressive numbers, especially in terms of efficiency.
Whether Henderson will be able to contain his emotions a little or more remains to be seen. All we know is that it will make for great television because there will definitely be more than one moment where Henderson will struggle with his anger and he will probably have to wrestle with himself in order to keep calm.
