Joe Nardone: Doug McDermott. He has certainly been the most productive on the offensive side of the ball. Folks can no longer say he is doing it at a low-level conference either. If he continues on with his pace while Creighton gets deeper in Big East Conference play, I see no reason as to why he won’t with the Naismith Award.
Becky Lee Wetzel: Doug McDermott. Obviously, he has great god-given talent. My favorite part of his game is his versatility, and his fundamentals are an absolute joy to watch.
Jared Mintz: It’s hard to disagree with Doug McDermott being the best player in the country, but I’m going to have to pick Marcus Smart here. I just think Smart’s level of responsibility, as well as how well rounded he is, has to give him the edge. Coming off of a 16 point, 10 rebound, 9 assist and 4 steal game in the loss to Kansas, Smart has displayed that he’s capable of doing everything in his Sophomore campaign, carrying the scoring load when his team needs him to (minus the Kansas loss) but really running an offense that scores the 11th most points per game, and has the 25th best shooting percentage in the nation. Smart is equally talented as he is physical, but puts it all together with a high basketball IQ on a team with lots of talent but less know-how. Sky’s the limit for the Cowboys, and I’m not embellishing by saying it’s all because of him.
