California basketball is generally associated with UCLA, and in 2006 that was no different, as UCLA wound up winning their second Pac-12 Tournament title, but for one night at least, it belonged to someone else. Leon Powe, a sophomore, led the third-seeded Bears after a thrilling win over Oregon, 91-87 in double overtime.
Powe’s tournament-record 41 points helped the Bears advance to the title game against the Bruins. Against USC the night before, Powe pulled down 20 rebounds in an 82-67 win over the Trojans.
Despite their eventual loss to UCLA, Powe was named the tournament’s MVP, averaging 26.7 points to go with 11.3 rebounds in Cal’s three games.
