In the early part of the 2000’s, Pitt and UConn had one of the fiercest rivalries in all of college basketball. In 2002, these two teams met in a classic, double-overtime thriller in the Big East tournament final.
With thirty-eight seconds remaining in the second overtime, Uconn inbounded the ball with a 66-64 lead. As the shot clock was about to run out, UConn’s Taliek Brown drained a 35-foot shot. The final score ended up 74-65, but it was Brown’s miraculous three-pointer that sealed the victory for the Huskies.
The 2002 classic was the first of three consecutive meetings in the conference tournament final for these two teams. The lower seeded team won the championship in all three years.
