In 1985, the Big East had perhaps the greatest season of any basketball conference ever. Georgetown finished the regular season ranked #1 in the AP poll, but that was only good enough for the second seed in the conference tournament.

St. John’s finished the regular season ranked #3 in the AP poll and was the top seed in the conference tournament. Syracuse and Villanova were the third and fourth seeds.

Patrick Ewing led his Hoyas to a conference title over Chris Mullins and St. John’s. Georgetown bested St. John’s again in the Final Four, but it was Villanova that won the national championship in 1985. Villanova completed their Cinderella run in the NCAA tournament when they defeated Georgetown by a score of 66-64 in the championship game.
