Apparently the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee hates the American Athletic Conference. I mean how else do you explain a 23 win SMU Mustangs team not getting an invitation to put on a pair of shiny dancing slippers and participate in some of the madness that is March?
SMU snubbed? Probably, but while the outrage is real and possibly just, it doesn’t let us delve into the real issues here. The biggest being the schedule SMU played this year. As in, at least apparently, the lack of quality opponents on their schedule.
No “big” out of conference wins, although there was that close loss to eventual ACC champions, the Virginia Cavaliers.
Okay. That’s about it as far as bashing their schedule. Yes, their non-conference schedule was weaker than a 90-year-old’s knees, but they did beat NCAA Tournament bound Memphis, UConn and Cincinnati. So, yeah, those are some really good wins.
Seriously, the only thing I can come up with (in my immediate aftermath of destruction HOT SPORTS TAKE!) is that the Selection Committee still really hates Mike Aresco for killing the old Big East Conference.
If you have any better theories (I don’t want a single rational one, either), please feel free to let us know in the comments.
