Bruce Pearl is on a roll: Trayvon Reed commits to Auburn

In what is turning into a daily occurrence since Bruce Pearl’s show-cause was lifted, Auburn has landed a Top 100 recruit. Class of 2014 center Trayvon Reed, who originally committed to Maryland, will spend his first semester at Elevate Academy in Florida before joining the team. He will be eligible for play during the second semester.

Auburn has also landed commitments from 2015 prep recruits Danjel Purifoy and Horace Spencer, as well as top junior college guard T.J. Dunans, in the last week since Pearl has been able to hit the recruiting trail.

Reed is regarded as one of the top big men in the 2014 recruiting class. He was on campus at Maryland in July when he was arrested on multiple charges. Court documents indicate that after being confronted by a plainclothes police officer about shoplifting, Reed tried to flee and wound up in an altercation with the officer. Maryland’s athletic department would not allow Reed to enroll for classes following the arrest.

Reed will be the second member of Auburn’s 2014 class who was forced to switch commitments as a result of an arrest. Cinmeon Bowers, a top junior college prospect, originally committed to Florida State before his scholarship was pulled following an arrest for tampering with evidence in which he and two teammates allegedly ate a bag of marijuana. Bowers committed to Auburn shortly after Pearl was hired.

Pearl has a history of giving players second chances. During his time as the head coach of the Milwaukee Panthers, he brought in Ed McCants following McCants’ dismissal from Northwestern. McCants went on to become the Horizon League Player of the year and to lead the Panthers to the Sweet 16 of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. If Pearl’s latest batch of recruits are able to stay out of trouble, Auburn might be turned around in a hurry.
