Former Maryland forward Charles Mitchell has been granted immediate eligibility to play for Georgia Tech for the upcoming season. The NCAA granted Mitchell’s request to not have to sit out a year. Mitchell is moving to Atlanta to be closer to his family and to his ailing grandmother.

Mitchell will be the fourth transfer for this upcoming season for head coach Brian Gregory, now in fourth season with the Yellow Jackets. Joining Mitchell are senior forward Demarco Cox from Mississippi, senior forward Robert Sampson from East Carolina and sophomore guard Josh Heath from South Florida. Gregory had this to say about Charles Mitchell joining his team:

"We are thankful that the NCAA has supported and granted Charles’ waiver for immediate eligibility. Coming back home to Atlanta will give him the opportunity to assist his family while achieving some tremendous academic and athletic goals"

Mitchell, a Marietta, Ga. native, will have two seasons of eligibility left for a Georgia Tech squad that finished with a 16-17 record last season, posting a 6-12 mark in conference play. Mitchell started in Maryland’s final ten games last season, averaging 6.0 points and 5.8 rebounds over 70 games for the Terrapins.
