Memphis’ Kedren Johnson ruled eligible to play this season

Memphis were given a big dose of good news when they found out earlier Monday that guard Kedren Johnson would be cleared to play for the upcoming season, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.

Johnson was suspended last year at Vanderbilt University for violating school policy, which cost him a year suspension from the SEC. This came on the heels of his impressive sophomore year, which saw him lead the Commodores in scoring (13.5/game), assists (3.6/game), and played in 33 games.

However, following an undisclosed violation, Johnson was suspended and released a statement upon the original announcement.

"“As we get closer to starting the new school year, I feel it is my responsibility to inform everyone of some disappointing news. I have been suspended as a student from Vanderbilt University for one year for a mistake I made, the result of using some very poor judgement,” Johnson’s statement said. “That also means I will not be on the basketball team this upcoming season.“It hurts me when I realize the consequences of my action, which happened near the end of the last school year. It was a violation of the good conduct expected of all Vanderbilt students. I take full responsibility and now must begin working to regain the trust and respect of my school, the student body, our fans and especially my coaches and friends on the team. I understand this will take time.”"

Now, Johnson will provide a huge boost to a Memphis side that was in dire need of an experienced guard. He will undoubtedly start and will be one of the key players for a Memphis squad loaded with young, inexperienced guards. He will also have two years of eligibility remaining, which gives him a chance to cement his position with the team this year.
