Jahlil Okafor heads AP Preseason All-American Team
By Jacob Rude
For the third time in five years, a freshman found their way onto the Associated Press preseason All-American team. None may be physically bigger than this season’s inclusion, Jahlil Okafor.
Okafor is joined by a host of upperclassmen in this year’s preseason list:
"The rest of the team, announced Monday, has a bit more experience: North Carolina junior point guard Marcus Paige, Wisconsin senior forward Frank Kaminsky, Louisville junior forward Montrezl Harrell and Wichita State junior point guard Fred VanVleet."
Harrison Barnes (2010) and Andrew Wiggins (2013) are the other two freshmen to have appeared on the preseason list, having played at North Carolina and Kansas, respectively.
Paige was the leading vote getter, finding his way onto 58 of the 65 ballots. Fellow junior Harrell was second with 56 votes. However, the big Okafor will be possibly under the most pressure, considering the expectations of the freshman center.
Wisconsin’s Kaminksy will also be under large expectations. With fellow forward Sam Dekker, the Badgers are primed for one of their best seasons in recent history.
Harrell flirted with the NBA Draft last spring, but instead chose to come back and lead a Cardinals team that will likely found themselves in the top half of the polls for most the year.
