Every college basketball season is marked by a special group of players that develops from being contributors in one season, to being THE contributors in the next.

We refer to this phenomenon as taking “the leap” to star status. Last year’s prototypical example of was Michigan Wolverines combo guard Nik Stauskas. The Canadian sharpshooter was a reliable spot-up man during his 2012-2013 freshman season in Ann Arbor.

With opposing scouting reports saturated with notes on the likes of Trey Burke and Tim Hardaway Jr., Stauskas was an afterthought despite his solid play. Instead, it was Stauskas who turned heads from the season’s opening tip. After spending a good portion of his freshman year parked behind the three-point line, Stauskas entered his sophomore year with an expanded role that allowed him to showcase a latent ability to create off the dribble and penetrate through interior defenders.

Stauskas made the leap, and led the Wolverines to the brink of returning to the Final Four. This year, these eight players are poised to make a similar improvement that will cause their teams to either rise to new heights or unexpectedly stay perched amongst college basketball’s elite.
