UNLV Rebels: Derrick Jones, four-star small forward, commits

The UNLV Running Rebels landed their first top 100 recruit for the 2015 class in Derrick Jones, a four-star small forward out of Pennsylvania.

Jones’ stock dropped this spring and summer, but he still projects to be a big-time player for the Rebels and head coach Dave Rice.

"Jones is a utility player who’s presently a combo forward but could transition to the wing full-time as he matures. Blessed with long arms and outstanding leaping ability, he plays much taller than his height. The catch for Jones has been that he’s an average shooter and ballhandler. Thus, when on the perimeter he’s less effecting creating and finishing plays. Improving those two areas will be vital for his development."

Jones will join Jalen Poyser, a four-star point guard ranked the #29 point guard in the nation. The two will complement one another well and give Rice a great start at the 2015 class.

"UNLV also holds a pledge from four star guard Jalen Poyser, who should effectively complement Jones. Poyser is a jump shooter who’s less athletic and not as effective scoring on contested attempts, and thus the duo’s strengths and weaknesses appear harmonious."

If freshman Rashad Vaughn were to unexpectedly return to the Rebels next year, UNLV would have one of the best teams in the country next season. Even without him, this duo will be a great pair next season.
