Kentucky Wildcats: Alex Poythress Suffers Possible Torn ACL
By Jacob Rude
The Kentucky Wildcats were dealt a big blow on Thursday as it appears forward Alex Poythress has suffered a knee injury. While reports are not official as of right now, it is feared that he has torn his ACL, as initial unconfirmed reports are suggesting.
Poythress has averaged just 5.5 points and 1.5 blocks a game this year, but he has started every game for the Wildcats and has been an integral part of the team. He was one of the many players who returned from last year’s squad in spite of being potential first round draft picks in the NBA Draft, forming the extremely deep roster for John Calipari this season.
With Poythress out, the Wildcats may have to officially abandon their platoon strategy, which was working with mixed success. Against Kansas, we saw it at it’s best, suffocating defense and relentless pressure. However, the Wildcats have also struggled in recent non-conference games and Calipari has flirted with ending the experiment.
Calipari has a regularly scheduled press conference tomorrow at 2 PM Eastern, originally slated to discuss the upcoming match-up with North Carolina. However, it’s expected that some type of formal announcement on Poythress’ status will be given then.
Whatever the outcome, we wish a speedy recovery to the Alex Poythress.
