5. Melo Trimble, Maryland

Stats: 16.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.3 steals, 44.1% FG, 35.7% 3-point

Trimble has been arguably the surprise of the early season in the Big Ten. As a freshman, Trimble was expected to be a solid player, but few expected this big of a contribution this quickly into his rookie campaign. His 16.3 points a contest land him tied for 9th in the Big Ten and his 1.3 steals are a solid contribution each night.

With Trimble, the Terrapins are a surprising 14-2 and currently ranked #10 in our latest poll and #11 by USA Today. Trimble has had a big impact on their success, scoring double figures in all but one game this season and averaging 18 points per contest in his first three Big Ten games.

If Trimble stays beyond this season, which seems a likely scenario, he’s going to quickly move up this list and could be topping it next season.
