Big Ten: 5 Favorites For Conference Player Of The Year
By Jacob Rude
While the front-runner for Big Ten player of the year is clear, there are a fair few candidates who are making cases of their own for second place. Could any of them possibly take over the top?
The Big Ten may not be the most talented conference this year from a team-perspective (that title goes to the Big 12 and ACC), but there are some top individual talents.
Most obviously, Frank Kaminsky is the front-runner for player of the year, and not because of his name alone. The Wisconsin big man has dominated competition this year and have led the Badgers to just two losses this year. His 17.2 points lead Bo Ryan’s squad as do his 8.2 rebounds.

On his heels, though, are a duo of freshman in D’Angelo Russell and Melo Trimble who have taken the conference by storm. The duo will fight not only for the top freshman of the conference, but also the best player in the conference.
In the middle is a combination of incumbents who are staking their claim and protecting their ground. Yogi Ferrell and DJ Newbill have had their fair share of big games that have kept them in the conversation for the competition.
And none of this mentions players like Caris LeVert (who unfortunately will be out of the year due to injury), Terran Petteway, or even James Blackmon Jr. who has added his name into the mix somewhat unsuspectingly.
Let’s look at the top five candidates for the Big Ten Player of the Year.
