There must be something about second round losses that riled Dean Smith up, because after finishing with a devastating loss to Boston College in the NCAA Tournament, Smith led the North Carolina Tar Heels to a Final Four with a group of one of his most exciting teams.

Before Vince Carter ever stepped foot on campus as one of the most athletic basketball players ever, there was Jerry Stackhouse who was bounding in from the perimeter to make would-be defenders look silly at the rim. He would pair up with a young and brash Rasheed Wallace who took great pleasure in catching lobs and tearing down the rim.

  • The Tar Heels played the toughest schedule in the nation and earned their way to a four-way tie for the ACC regular season championship. They had a heartbreaking loss against Wake Forest in the ACC Tournament Championship game, and got a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament where they reached the Final Four after impressive wins over Georgetown, who had Allen Iverson, and Kentucky, who had Tony Delk, Walter McCarty, and Antoine Walker.

They would fall to Arkansas in the Final Four, but Dean Smith was able to harness the explosive Rasheed Wallace, who got rebounds instead of technical fouls in college, and utilized Stackhouse’s athleticism to bring North Carolina to their 10th National Semifinal game.
