March Madness: 15 Greatest Gus Johnson Moments (w/ video)
By Jacob Rude
4. “What. A. Game.”
This game had it all and is one of the greatest in recent memory for the NCAA Tournament. You had Adam Morrison, his awesome mustache, and his #3-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs battling UCLA in Oakland, which is essentially a home game.
After sprinting out to a huge lead reaching as many as 17 points in the first half, it looked like Morrison and company would shock a loaded with future NBA players and advance to the Elite Eight.
Then, oddly, Gonzaga forgot how to score. A free throw from Morrison put the ‘Zags up 71-62 with 3:26 left, but it would also be the last points they’d score. Finishing the game on an 11-0 run, UCLA gave us a version of Gus Johnson we may never see again, sending us to Defcon Zero for the first time ever on Luc Richard Mbah a Moute‘s lay-up with 10 seconds left.
A steal by Mbah a Moute on the ensuing possession all but sealed the deal, leaving Morrison in tears and Johnson nearly speechless, only able to repeat “what a game” over and over. And for that, we thank you, UCLA.
