14. “Count it and the foul. What a play”

Here, we see Gus in his natural environment: calling the upset of a smaller school over a traditional power. Also, it’s evident that he relies on certain catch phrases.

First, we have the Commodores going on top with just under a minute to play on a baseline jumper. The ensuing possession from NC State resulted in a foul that sent the Wolfpack to the line, where they’d subsequently make both free throws.

Which brings us to the Gus moment. Vandy wastes no time, coming down and executing a perfect backdoor cut and lay-up at the rim with a foul. While Vandy would miss the free throw, NC State couldn’t get an even half-way decent shot at the buzzer and the Law of Gus strikes the Wolfpack.
