March Madness: 15 Greatest Gus Johnson Moments (w/ video)
By Jacob Rude
8. “[Tarzan roar]”
Johnson is the king of indistinguishable noises on clutch plays. Yes, even more than Vitale, who is indistinguishable nearly all the time. As the list goes on, you’ll see more “ohhhh!” and “ahhhhh!” moments from Johnson, which is the best way to describe his arrival at Defcon Zero.
But the noise elicited from Johnson when Price hits this game-tying three isn’t an oh or an ah. It’s a roar that almost blows up his microphone and probably gave the poor sound guy with headphones on a heart attack. I wasn’t kidding when I said Price had mythical powers over the noises coming out of Johnson.
In Johnson’s defense, that was a bonkers shot by Price that sent the game to overtime, a game UConn would eventually win. It’s also the only game on this list to be featured twice, although the case could be made for some of the games to follow.
