8. (10) Indiana vs. (7) Wichita State, Midwest Region
Why This Upset Will Happen: For a stretch in mid-to-late-January, the Hoosiers were a lock to make the tournament and were one of the best offenses in the country. While they lost their form from then, they seemed to regain part of it back in the Big Ten tournament.
The Hoosiers have a high-octane offense that, when they hit shots, is absolutely deadly. Ask the Terrapins how well the Hoosiers can play, as Indiana routed them at home behind red-hot shooting.
The Hoosiers’ biggest weakness, their lack of size, can’t be exploited by Wichita State, either. Had the Hoosiers been matched up with a different team, it’d be hard to imagine them advancing, but against a smaller Shockers team, Indiana could pull off the upset.
Why This Upset Won’t Happen: Well, Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet are nothing to scoff about. In fact, the argument could be made, rather easily, that they’re the best backcourt in the nation. They’re looking for redemption from last year’s disappointment.
If anything, this team might be under-seeded as they’re a quality mid-major who can make a deep run in the tournament. If they lock down the Hoosiers on the outside, they’ll be able to get past Indiana.
