Duke Blue Devils: Potential Candidates to Eventually Replace Mike Krzyzewski
Mike Brey (Notre Dame)

It’s not hard to make the argument that Mike Brey is the most successful member of the Coach K coaching tree. He has the most career wins of any Krzyzewski disciple (332). He’s also the only Coach K assistant to beat his mentor head to head (Brey’s Fighting Irish knocked off Duke in 2014).

Brey has a coaching pedigree that rivals anyone’s. Even before he joined Coach K’s staff, he was on the bench at DeMatha High School, learning from Hall of Fame high school coach Morgon Wootten. The fact that Krzyzewski noticed Brey enough to pluck him off of a high school staff offers an idea of how much Brey stands out as a coaching talent.
His work with the Irish has been more than respectable, and looks to be trending upward. Until Wisconsin beat the Kentucky Wildcats in last season’s Final Four, it was Notre Dame that gave the Wildcats their biggest scare.
If Brey returns to Durham, he’ll be carrying a proven track record with him, one that will set him a part from any other individual on this list. The Blue Devils are accustomed to consistency, and Brey’s teams have consistently won. Since 1995, Brey has only coached two teams to losing records (one of those seasons was his second season at Delaware).
