Michigan guard Caris Levert’s health status is up in the air

Thursday night John Beilein and the Michigan Wolverines are set to take on the Purdue Boilermakers as the Wolverines travel to Mackey Arena for the 7:00 p.m. ET contest. The Wolverines have been improving as a squad, but may likely be without their star player, Caris LeVert.

The senior guard missed the Wolverines’ last game against Penn State, where Michigan still secured a convincing 79-56 victory over the Nittany Lions despite of LeVert’s absence. LeVert has been listed as day to day by the Michigan coaching staff, but according to Scout’s Joshua Henschke, Head Coach John Beilein believes that whether or not LeVert ends up playing against the Boilermakers will depend on how the guard feels in practice.

When asked about his star guard’s practice time as of late Beilein said, “Caris will be out there trying to practice today. “We’ll see how he does. If he is not able to do it without pain, he won’t be out there. If he plays without pain, he’ll be in there.”

Per multiple reporters, it seems as if Beilein has been obviously mum on the status of his team’s best player and will not provide any solid or reliable answers in regards to Caris LeVert’s health and progression through rehab.

According to Beilein, LeVert has been working furiously during his rehab sessions to allow for the fastest recovery possible after suffering a “lower leg injury”.

According to Brendan Quinn of Mlive.com, Beilein was asked if there was a possibility of LeVert facing a long term issue in regards to the injury.

“There’s a chance of anything right now,” Beilein said. “There’s a chance of it being a one-day issue just as much as it’s a long-term issue.”

Also noted by Mlive, LeVert has had a history of issues with his left leg. Just last year, LeVert fractured his left foot, causing him to miss the rest of the season. As a Sophomore LeVert endured a stress fracture on the very same foot, which ended up requiring surgery.

Whether or not LeVert’s newest leg issue will impact him as greatly as his previous two is still undetermined. As of right now, it’s too early to attempt to predict how long this whole thing may play out, but Wolverine fans would love for a speedy resolution to the issue.

The Wolverines’ next three games include the aforementioned game against No. 20 Purdue, a meeting with No. 3 Maryland, and a road match-up against No. 19 Iowa.

Michigan finds itself fortunate enough to be able to take on the Terps at home, but face an extremely difficult task with the addition of two tough road games in electric environments.

The bottom line is that these conference games would already be tough with Caris LeVert and if the star guard isn’t ready to go, it would take an impressive team effort for the Wolverines to come out with a win or two.

Last season the Wolverines couldn’t manage to adapt to injuries due to the severity of them as well as to whom they were inflicted upon. We have not really seen that this season, but conference play could end up being a struggle for an underrated Michigan team.
